True Beauty Review: A Heartwarming K-Drama About Love and Self-Acceptance

True Beauty

Few K-dramas balance genuine emotional weight with pure, feel-good comfort as well as True Beauty. This high school romance, which grew out of a beloved webtoon, became a genuine phenomenon in 2020. In fact, it catapulted its cast — especially Cha Eun-woo — into international stardom. Even years later, it remains a go-to rewatch for fans of the genre.

Overview

Director Kim Sang-hyub built True Beauty (여신강림, “Descendant of the Sun Goddess”) around Yaongyi’s popular webtoon of the same name. This 2020–2021 South Korean romantic comedy follows Lim Ju-kyung, a high school girl who transforms herself into a stunning “goddess” through skillful makeup after years of being bullied for her looks. Only one boy has ever seen her without it: the brooding but caring Lee Su-ho.

Plot Summary

Lim Ju-kyung has spent years enduring bullying because of her looks. So she teaches herself makeup artistry through online tutorials, and soon transforms into a stunning “goddess” who quickly rises to popularity at her new school. But there’s a catch: she’s terrified of anyone seeing her bare face, so she goes to extreme lengths to protect the secret. Then everything changes. Lee Su-ho, a handsome but guarded classmate carrying his own painful past, accidentally sees her without makeup — and, unexpectedly, doesn’t reject her for it.

As Ju-kyung and Su-ho grow closer, they slowly open up to each other in ways neither expected. Along the way, they help heal old wounds tied to bullying, family pressure, and self-worth. Their bond deepens further when charming, easygoing Han Seo-jun enters the picture. As Su-ho’s close friend and Ju-kyung’s neighbor, he also falls for her, creating a gentle love triangle. Meanwhile, the show weaves in larger themes about what “true beauty” really means beneath the surface.

Why You Should Watch It
  • A genuinely feel-good, comforting watch. Fans consistently describe the show as a “pick-me-up” drama, perfect for anyone wanting something lighthearted, funny, and warm.
  • A star-making performance from Cha Eun-woo. His role as Lee Su-ho became a defining moment in his career. From there, his profile grew far beyond Korea and into global fandom.
  • A surprisingly heartfelt take on beauty standards. Beneath the romance and comedy, the show digs into real themes around bullying, self-esteem, and the pressure of appearance. As a result, it resonates with viewers who connect to that struggle.
  • A cast that commits fully across the board. Critics and fans alike praise Moon Ga-young, Hwang In-yeop, and Park Yoo-na for excellent performances, even in supporting roles.
  • A fan-favorite “wrong” love triangle that sparked real debate. Hwang In-yeop’s Han Seo-jun became such a fan favorite that his ultimate fate in the story still sparks passionate discussion years later.

Fair warning: even devoted fans admit the romantic storyline’s writing gets messy in places, particularly around how Su-ho’s arc resolves and how Seo-jun’s story unfolds. So if you want a tightly plotted romance, some pacing and character decisions may frustrate you. But if you’re watching for warmth, comedy, and charm, the show delivers in spades.

Conclusion

True Beauty earned its massive popularity by blending genuine warmth, humor, and real emotional stakes around self-image and belonging. Plus, the cast became stars in their own right because of it. Its romantic plotting isn’t flawless. Still, for anyone looking for a comforting, rewatchable K-drama with real heart, this remains one of the genre’s most beloved entries years after it first aired.
